If you are looking for someone to blame for the way Shari Green voted on the Haldi Road Northern Supportive Recovery Centre for Women you need to partly blame her mother and myself, Shari's stepfather.
As a child in the early 1950s I lived in the 1500 block of 10th avenue, for the past 18 years our home has been in the 2500 block of Laurier Crescent.
A number of years ago our neighbourhood banded together to fight the rezoning for the Elizabeth Fry Society home for single mothers, then we complained about Iris Place being built a block away from our home.
Oh my, mentally disabled people in our neighbourhood, what was going to happen to us? Within five blocks or our home we also have the Phoenix Transition home and Saint Patrick's half way house After all our fighting, it just didn't matter, none of these residents are any problem, they are just our neighbours.
For the first three years Iris Place existed I was sure it was empty because I never saw anyone coming or going. The people living in these facilities are citizens of Prince George and have the right to live here.
The residents of Haldi Road will soon learn the people living at the Northern Supportive Recovery Centre are just people, Prince George citizens, trying to get their lives back on track. Lastly, it's just Canadian to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
