Lots of art events this month

During the short time I have resided in the Prince George region, I am always pleasantly surprised by how long the days become as we approach the summer season, after the cold, dark months of winter time.

It's like I feel liberated. I no longer want to race home at the end of the work day and hibernate. Instead, it's about jumping into my car, dog in tow, and getting busy with new activities, groups or events.

So I thought I would take a moment to share some of the neat things our local artisan guilds and performing arts groups are offering over the coming month. There really is something for everyone here in P.G.

The P.G. Fibre Arts Guild will be offering the Level 1 and 2 Master Weaving Courses from Olds College in Prince George later this month.

These in-person courses will guide you through one week of instructions, with assignments to take home and finish over the following year. It's an amazing opportunity to learn about an ancient art that is definitely seeing a comeback in popularity.

The Level 1 course runs May 13-18 and Level 2 runs May 20-25. For more information please visit www.oldscollege.ca.

The P.G. Quilters' Guild holds meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Connaught Youth Centre at 7 p.m. The guild also holds an annual retreat at Ness Lake Bible Camp for three days at the end of April.

Workshops on a range of topics are held once a month, and "Community Quilts" meet the first Wednesday of

each month. For more information, visit www.princegeorgequiltersguild.ca.

The Artist Co-Op is a place for artists to meet, learn and teach each other.

You can drop in anytime from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days per week. Beginners are welcome too.

The Artist Co-Op is located at Hart Crown Plaza at 2955 Hart Highway or you can call 250-962-0030.

Theatre Northwest has announced its 24th season for 2017-2018, with an exciting line-up that is described as "confronting and dealing with pride, and what it means to be proud."

From the acclaimed Canadian play Jake's Gift, to the magical and unique adaptation of Frank Capra's film It's a Wonderful Life: The Radio Play, to the powerful and mysterious Hedda Noir based on the classic Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen (done in the style of film noir), to the hilarious and poignant The Best Brothers by Daniel MacIvor, it is surely going to be one of the most ambitious seasons to date.

It's best to get your season subscription early - please visit www.theatrenorthwest.com for more information on ticket packages.

Another city tradition is coming up soon with the PGSO's Mother's Day Tea Sweet Baroque concert on May 14th at Westwood Church on Ospika, at 3 p.m.

Enjoy a delightful tea and treats - as well as a solo by the 2016 PGSO-Integris Youth Concerto Competition winner.

Tickets are on sale at Central Interior Tickets or by phone at 250-596-0020.

ColdSnap Music Festival is presenting acclaimed singer, songwriter, pianist and actress Alicia Witt for a live performance at the CN Centre on Saturday as part of the Fancon After Dark series. For more information please visit www.ticketmaster.com.

The District 57 Tapestry Singers are presenting It Takes a Village at St. Michael's Church on June 3 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Studio 2880.
