I am responding to several items including city council's decision to looking into the cost of operating the Nechako Branch of the Prince George Public Library, which is located on the Hart Highway.
It is a good idea to make sure that it is being well used, for the cost involved. However, this announcement came at a time when the mayor and city councillors are implementing controversial changes such as re-instating costly parking meters and charging for bringing unwanted items to the Foothills garbage dump.
It, therefore, concerns me that we could be seeing the Hart Highway branch being closed. This branch is well supported by local people, as it has a summer reading program for children, and it is used by people from Salmon Valley, Nukko Lake and other nearby communities.
A petition has been circulating on the Hart regarding the library. I hope that City Hall will ensure that this service will not be closing.
It would also be a disaster to charge people using the Foothills land fill to dump items. It will cause some to dump things in the bush instead.
As for implementing parking meters again in the downtown of Prince George, this will cause people to avoid going to the area, as they did in the past. We don't need a million dollars spent on meters that will take a long time to recover the cost of them.
Are there no people on city council with common sense?
