When I read the piece submitted by Fred Tuftin this morning, I choked on my coffee.
The $16,500 paid to the city manager Kathleen Soltis for 70 hours work, after hundreds of people put in equal and more amounts of time with no concern for payment, is nothing but pure avarice.
For over 30 years I've pointed out that most Canadians support their governments exactly like they condemn the Americans et al. Those of us who live on limited income because of health, age, etc. know this all too well. It seems oligarchy, which defines as the few controlling the many, continues its hold on Canada reaching deeply into the pockets of the common folk.
Did this last statement remind anyone of the 19th century English roots of colonization, which still hang like over us like the smoke and ash of the forest fires?
The reality of oligarchy existing within public institutions, from the local to the international, is as rife in Canada as it is south of the line.
The Donald, existing across the globe, is as alive under the banner of personal success through monetary gain as it is prevalent in every area of management. We believe their promises like lemmings to the sea.
Kathleen Soltis spoke in defense of this "robbery" for she is little more than a member of the local oligarchy. Public service is an expression which comes with a ridiculous price tag when attached to our institutions. It seems the adage "everything changes while staying the same" is omnipotent.
