Re: BC Builds program aims to help middle-income earners (Optimist, May 2)
The BC Builds program has some good ideas like using under utilized land, but I’m not sure I agree with the idea that taxpayers should pay for rental housing for middle-income earners.
The middle-income at the top end of the program is $191,910 for larger rental homes. That’s a large amount of income.
Lisa Helps, an executive lead with BC Builds, says in the article, “It’s not like they can’t afford housing, but that there isn’t enough housing for them to rent.” OK, so they can afford rental housing, yes?
The supply of housing is a different matter that can be solved by construction companies. The government shouldn’t venture into this area with taxpayer funds unless the program is targeted for lower income people.
