Letters: OCP does not reflect the interests of Delta residents

Why are we rushing this to a public hearing?

A large crowd was on hand at the OCP open house at the South Delta Recreation Centre on Thursday, March 7 to get information and fill out feedback forms.

Editor:

It’s alarming that at the April 8 council meeting, Delta staff skipped over the OCP feedback on the screen presentation from Tsawwassen residents regarding that the housing target order could be achieved without high rises; they want to see more detailed planning on heights and have suggestions for a balanced approach to development.

Further, despite the community feedback of wanting to ensure resident input is considered, and many commented on the unnecessary fast pace of the process; these matters were also glossed over.

It’s staggering that our elected officials failed to ask questions. It’s also astounding that there are so many unanswered questions and issues in the 807-page OCP document, and yet it was signed off and council sent it to a public hearing.

I also feel that it’s inaccurate to report (Optimist, April 11) that the majority of Ladner and North Delta residents who participated are generally in favour of the proposals, while it was the opposite for Tsawwassen.

Eighty percent of those participating are pro development; however, less than 20 per cent of Tsawwassen residents support the plan for managing growth and it’s less than 30 per cent combined for all of Delta.
