Letter to the editor: ‘RCMP, you have lost my respect’

"Real criminals have stolen from us and accosted us but the police do nothing."

This morning, for the second time in a few months, I was pulled over by an unmarked police vehicle. The officer told me that he pulled me over because my license plate was covered in snow. Fair enough. After running my plates and checking my driver’s license, he then proceeded to administer a breathalyzer test.

The first time this happened a few months ago, the officer informed me he pulled me over because he saw me coming out of a liquor store, so to paraphrase, I was pulled over because I was shopping! He also administered a breathalyzer test. Anyways, with annoyance, I told both officers what my blood alcohol content would be and I was correct both times – zero!

In those same few months, my wife and I have been robbed of something in the neighbourhood of $50,000 in company equipment and personal possessions and my dear wife has been threatened with bodily harm. The police response? Nothing, because “those are civil matters.”

As a law-abiding citizen, I have now been harassed twice for something I have not done. Real criminals have stolen from us and accosted us but the police do nothing. Their work is to serve and protect. My wife and I have not been served or protected. Instead, I have been targeted, oppressed and harassed. My wife has been ignored.

Many Canadians do not trust or respect the intuitions of the RCMP or “city” police. Unfortunately, RCMP, you have lost my respect and my cooperation as well. Get mounted.

The police officer this morning did not even have the integrity to issue me a ticket for the infraction I did have. My license plate was covered in snow.
