Letter to the editor: ‘Downtown Prince George needs a grocery store’

It will be more difficult living downtown without a grocery store in the area.

Some food items purchased at Save-On Foods in Prince George.

I am writing in regards to the Save-On Foods in the Parkwood Mall that will be leaving the downtown core and moving to Pine Centre Mall next year.

I was disappointed when I first heard of the store leaving, especially since I currently live in the downtown area. As a downtown resident, I am well aware of the current state of the area. Still, we need a grocery store downtown, though I realize that getting a new one to move to Parkwood will take time and effort.

I had hoped to hear of something by now, but as of yet, I have not heard of one that will be moving into the current Parkwood Save-On Foods location. It will be more difficult living downtown without a grocery store in the area. With all of the newer residential buildings going up (the student housing by the library, the place by city hall, and the new residence across from the Telus building on 6th), I had hoped that something would have been announced by the end of this year.

I realize that the mayor and city council have a lot to deal with, but I am disheartened to see downtown Prince George be reduced to the state that it's currently in. I'm not saying that I have all of the answers, but I definitely have some concerns.

At least the new Save-On Foods in Pine Centre Mall is only a bus ride away, but I still think that downtown Prince George needs a grocery store. We keep losing more and more businesses downtown. I understand why the businesses are leaving; still, it's sad to see.
