What better way to say "thank you" to your mom or special lady in your life on Mother's Day than with a nice bottle of wine? Whether your mother prefers a white, red or rose, I have it covered.
Mother's Day was first celebrated by Anna Jarvis in 1908 in West Virginia. She campaigned to have it recognized as a holiday and it was finally recognized in about 1914. Now most countries celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.
So, what is a 'mother' to you? How about a chef, secretary, taxi driver, doctor/nurse, personal shopper, photographer, teacher, party planner, coach, counselor? I could go on but often, it's someone who does the work of 20, and for free!!
If you want to give your mom a little something - in return for all she is and all she does for you - check out my picks, below.
Happy Mother's Day from me to all the other moms out there. I hope you enjoy your day!!
KIM CRAWFORD
PANSY ROSE (142992)
NEW ZEALAND
$17.99
Located in Hawkes Bay on the east coast of New Zealand, Kim Crawford uses unique innovations and techniques to produce award-winning wines. The Hawkes Bay region benefits from long hot days in the summer with cool winters, which makes this the perfect home for growing orchards and vineyards. The climate along with the soils and a great winemaker can be magical. New Zealand is famous for Sauvignon Blanc, but why not try a Rose? It's that time of year when your palate may still craving a red, but not a heavy one. This is where a nice Rose comes into play. Pansy Rose is a blend of Malbec and Merlot - a must try. The ripe, red berry fruits are very refreshing and perfect for this time of year. Once you pour it in your glass, the deep rose colour is reminiscent of a summer sunset. The aromas of red fruits fill your glass; there is definitely strawberry coming on the nose and palate followed through with a tartness of raspberry shortly after. This Rose is rich, luscious and dry. $17.99
RENWOOD
ZINFANDEL (749218)
USA
$17.99
Renwood was established by Boston native Robert Smerling in 1993. Renwood is in Amador County which is located within Plymouth California - better known as Gold country. Many people who relocated to the Amador County in search of striking it rich found it wasn't that easy - instead, some found their riches in wineries. Renwood specializes in producing Zinfandel, so you know you're getting nothing but the best. This particular Zinfandel was featured by Rachel Ray on her show cooking "Zinfully Delicious Short Ribs" with guest chef Bobby Flay. I think I will be trying this recipe next - yummy!! Renwood Zinfandel achieved 93 points at the LA International Wine Competition. I tried this Zinfandel on its own and enjoyed the full-bodied, jammy flavours Zins are famous for. Once again, raspberry and strawberry were predominant, with hints of toasty oak on the dry finish. $17.99
WAYNE GRETZKY
THE GREAT WHITE 2012 (889386)
BC VQA
$13.99
With wineries in both Ontario and BC, Peller Estates is behind this great collaboration to bring Wayne Gretzky wines to BC. In order to gain something, though, we have to lose something - the Wayne Gretzky line of wines will replace the Peller Estate Reserve wines, bringing a new line of exciting new wines to all of us to try. Winemaker Stephanie Stanley has the passion and drive it takes to produce award-winning wines: since joining Peller in 2005, she's won more than 300 awards. She is not just part of the wine-making process - she will go into the vineyards and isn't scared to get her hands dirty. The Great White is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Semillon. The best part about this wine is it was cool fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. That ensures all the varietals' true characteristics show through. After the first sip, the ripe fruits of peaches, pineapple and juicy pear make you salivate. The off-dry finish is balanced perfectly with the acidity. Enjoy this white on its own.
