When I was an American citizen my passport contained a warning that I was prohibited from traveling in certain countries, including Cuba, on pain of prosecution under "Title 8. U.S Code".
As a Canadian, my passport contains no such prohibition.
I have visited Cuba several times. I was able to taunt my American friends with tales of my travels, expressing pity that citizens of "The Land of the Free" were not allowed to visit a neighbour some 150 kilometres from their shores.
We Canadians are being threatened with future legislation that would allow our government to prohibit travel to lands of their choosing. Our cherished freedoms are already circumscribed with security laws giving the administration the right to prohibit our flying and possible loss of citizenship for those with dual citizenship.
We will have the opportunity in October to stop this erosion of rights that have made Canada a true "Land of the Free."
