I have just read two excellent articles from today's Citizen (Saturday, June 17). I have seen again the happy shining faces of the three recent grads from the CLA programs (Centre for Learning Alternatives) held at CNC on Wednesday.
I say "seen again" as I had the privilege and honour of attending the ceremonies. The air conditioner in the gym was certainly doing its job (brrrr) but the energy from the 75 young folk there to receive well deserved recognition for their phenomenal accomplishments, their Dog Wood diplomas and perhaps one of 25 bursaries or scholarships being offered, warmed our hearts.
Each one of these students has faced many obstacles in their short lifetime, but every one of them really wanted to be in one of these programs, they chose to learn not because they had to but because they have a vision for the path they want to take.
A unique presentation of the valedictory address was actually three addresses, given by three very articulate, well-spoken students: Zoey (Leith) Friesen, Jordan Fiddler and Kiana Smith. Each one spoke of the struggles and challenges up to and along the way as well as difficulties overcome, and about understanding, caring teachers and staff - successes achieved and a brighter future ahead.
A huge, "Thank you!" to all the teachers, and to The Citizen paper for giving such great coverage/recognition to this, oh-so-worthwhile program of alternative learning.
And here's to the class of 2016: CONGRATULATIONS... what an inspiration you are. All 75 of you!
