Last Sunday was city clean-up day.
Three generations of the Yarmish- McLellan family were doing our part this morning. As we have done for many years, our family spends a few hours removing garbage, working to keep this city clean.
Our efforts this year were focused on North Nechako Road, and a stretch of riverbank at the end of North Nechako. We cleaned up a mess of garbage that was thoughtlessly dumped. A smashed window, broken furniture, tires, an old fridge, piles of household garbage and just a whole lot of junk. We hauled all of the garbage to the landfill, ensuring proper disposal by the Regional District. As a family, we spent much of our morning talking about why people litter, and why more people don't report littering.
We were surprised when the RCMP paid us a visit this afternoon, indicating someone had reported us for "dumping garbage". To those folks who called the police, we thank you very much. The system of reporting a littering offense is working. More people should report!.
Next year, please pause long enough to realize the garbage is being removed (piles of it) and we sure would welcome your efforts to pitch in. For the time it took you to call the police, we could have used your help.
We will be out again next year. Please join us to keep our city clean.
