This weekend, we will be taking advantage of some of the exciting events happening in town.Likely, we will be heading downtown and joining in on the BMO KidzArt Dayz at the Two Rivers Gallery.

We went a few years ago and it was pretty amazing and very interactive for the kids. Also, you can get discount gallery seasons passes (50 per cent off the regular price).

The Exploration Place, Prince George and District Railway and Forestry Museum and Huble Homestead will be set up for crafting and activities for the kids.

Community organizations including the Prince George Public Library (my favourite), Kiwanis Prince George, Prince George Native Friendship Centre, REAPS, Active Minds (UNBC) and the YMCA will also be on site.

Exciting news as well - Fred Penner will be on stage at 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday. As I type these words, I feel a little squee from my five-year-old self well-up inside me and bubble out.

Fred was my first rock star. Well, him, Raffi, Mr. Rogers and Mr. Dressup.Sadly, I never was able to see Mr. Rogers in person and I have yet to see Raffi, but I did see Mr. Dressup when he came to Vanier Hall back in the '80s. What I remember best was that Casey and Finnegan were not in attendance.

But Fred, him I love.

I had a tape and story book of the Cat Came Back when I was a kid and I may still remember all of the words.(As well, the National Film Board has a very classic cartoon with our favourite cat who came back available to watch if you are feeling nostalgic.)

When we had 1 1/2 channels growing up in Prince George, cartoons were limited to Saturday mornings and whatever was on the CBC.

I am sure that most of my generation that lived outside of major centres will remember Fred crawling through the log into the clearing to sing songs and remind us to use our manners.

A major celebrity is coming to town, folks.

You need to be there.

When Fred came to the Artswells Festival a few years ago, I heard that he was absolutely swarmed by people in their 30s gushing about how much they love him.

I, for one, am going to play it cool.

I'll shove my kids up to the front to dance and hope that he calls on them or talk about how cute they are. Maybe I will arrange a selfie with Fred in the background.

That's cool, right?
