Increase access to municipal compost

I applaud the efforts of the city and regional district for the creation and sale of compost but find the location of it only at Foothills a huge deterrent.

It requires anyone wanting compost to wait in what is frequently a very long line and severely limits the ability of those without a truck to avail themselves of the great product.

I think it would be wonderful if compost was made available at both sites, by bucket or truck load. It would dramatically increase access to compost by persons without trucks, and would prevent a huge amount of pollution being caused by the long drive to Foothills and subsequent waits.

Given that district trucks constantly come and go from both the Vanway and Quince transfer stations, most often running one way empty, trucks on the way to the transfer stations could be filled with compost instead of running empty, then the compost could be dumped and the now empty container used to haul debris back.

This increases operational efficiency and profitability and will allow consumers to bring their own containers to fill with compost, such as five-gallon pails.

By allowing far more people to easily and more conveniently purchase compost closer to home, in quantities as little or as much as they need, it will allow compost to be purchased in a much more 'green' manner by helping to reduce traffic to and from the Foothills landfill and will significantly increase the district's annual sales of compost.

I urge the City of Prince George and the Regional District of Fraser Fort George to consider making the awesome compost that's now being sold only at Foothills available to many more people, simply by making it available at more locations, and in lesser quantities. It is a simple change that can be a real win-win situation for all, and will help to keep our green initiatives green.
