Huge tax hike

I paid my 2017 property taxes last week. I have been biting my tongue since I received my tax bill in May. Nothing new.

I have bit my tongue and said nothing publicly on at least twenty issues over the last fifty years but this was the proverbial hair. Our city fathers proudly announced they have approved a 3.18 per cent tax increase for this year. A little fib for us poor taxpayers. They approved a 3.18 per cent tax rate increase and that combined with this year's offensive property assessments raised my taxes by 17.5 per cent.

The city can't claim ignorance as the assessments were out in January long before the tax rate was final and mine wasn't unique. With the lack of noise on this subject, our city managers must be extremely happy with this windfall. I am hoping for no more potholes, no more moaning about snow removal and maybe no more traffic bottlenecks. I hope the first thing I notice is no salary increases or for our city managers, council or mayor.
