Just before my column was due yesterday, I resolved to forego my usual tirade, and simply state the following: on November 11th we remember those who died for our freedom, and on November 15th there is a civic election; please, honor those who have fallen, do your duty, and go vote.

The ballots that are waiting to be cast on Saturday have been paid for by thousands of heroic deeds and sacrifices. Earlier this week, my fellow columnist, Todd Whitcombe, stated the loss of life Canada has experienced in the 21st Century alone by publishing the names of those armed forces members who have died while serving their country since 2002. It is worthy to note that the list grew for the first time in three years because of the tragedies last month.

To be clear, every election, from local union votes to federal contests, is an opportunity to honor those who have paid the ultimate price for our liberty, and will never be able to use our democratic way of life for themselves. Truly, they and their families can never be compensated for what they have done to keep us the "True North, Strong and Free".

With that in mind, I would once again encourage my readership to get involved in the local Conservative nomination for Cariboo-Prince George before November 20th, as well as the NDP and Liberal nominations when those come to pass. Whatever your politics, you have a responsibility to weigh in to the democratic process from start to finish.

Also, for those of you who adore freedom and your firearms, don't forget to sign up for the National Firearms Association, which is currently having a contest for their BC representative. Ballots are due to be mailed back by December 1st, and our very own Sheldon Clare is vying for this seat. You can learn more about what the NFA does online and on Facebook.

In the end, it is important for people to realize that while we can never repay those who have given up their lives for us, we can be inspired by their actions to utilize our rights and freedoms at the ballot box. They were prepared to defend our country on the hills, in the streets, and on the beaches, whatever the cost may be. The least we can do is ensure that their sacrifice was not in vain.

Lest we forget.
