Thank you to the editor and reporters of the Prince George Citizen. It is more than refreshing to have a newspaper hold our local government to accountability. The article on the gabion dikes, and the interviews with the residents composed a newspaper article that should be the standard for all reporting in the province.
The citizens of Prince George are intelligent, questioning people. When a local resident poses the question "are they stupid", I'm sure many of the readers thought the same thing. As a resident and taxpayer of the city, we have a right to question the methods used for the gabion dike. Since both Surf-Tec and city officials were unavailable for comment, the Citizen newspaper did its due diligence and moved forward with their front page story.
But with a bouquet, comes a beef. Ms. Green's letter to the editor, with her repeated phrasing "are they stupid" was both insulting and belittling. Offensive to the readers, but more so to the resident and voter who originally used the words "are they stupid". She used the media to attack those brave enough to speak up and be interviewed and attack those reporting the event.
I found Ms. Green's letter both unprofessional and unacceptable as the elected mayor of Prince George.
The citizens of the Prince George will continue to question, investigate, and discuss every decision made, every dollar spent. I thank the Prince George Citizen for being there to support our community, for opening dialogue on important issues and keeping all its readers fully informed.
