What is it with all the negativity about Highway 16 East?
First, Mr. Godbout groused about it in his editorial and then Ms. Kuklis lamented how boring and long the drive was in her article in The Extra.
Of the four highways leaving Prince George, Highway 16 East is the most beautiful.
The scenery is breathtaking as the mountains slowly appear in the distance. It is also spectacularly green.
The most magical thing, however, is the chance of seeing wildlife. I go on many road trips and usually choose this highway.
There has only been one time when I haven't seen anything. On my last trip I saw a bear, a young moose and several deer.
I have also seen coyotes and foxes.
It is not unusual to see several bears by the side of the road.
A couple of years ago a friend and I went to Jasper.
We saw very little in the park but on our way to the park and back we saw 33 black and grizzly bears including a mom with yearling twins. It is also great as that the highway is not too busy so you can pull over to get great pictures from your vehicle.
Finally, there are things to do along the way.
You can stop at Purden Lake for a swim and the restaurant there makes the best poutine I have ever tasted.
You can go for a hike in the Ancient Forest, which is accessible to people with mobility issues. There are also many things to see and do in McBride.
Back on the food thing, the restaurant at the railway station has the best potato salad ever.
So, Mr. Godbout and Ms. Kuklis, I do not agree with you on this one. Highway 16 East is a gem.
