Hart biking unsafe

The end of last month and first days of June were Bike to Work Week.

This annual event was the impetus for me to stop procrastinating and start riding my bicycle to work from the Aberdeen subdivision on the Hart Highway to CNC. In order to ride to work, I have no choice but to use the portion of the John Hart Highway between the Northwood Pulp Mill Road and the John Hart Bridge.

Traveling south with the traffic on a bicycle on this portion of the highway is impossible, as once past the weigh scales there is no shoulder whatsoever, never mind a bicycle lane. Compounding the problem is the speed of traffic, which tends to flow at about 80 km/h instead of the posted 60 km/h speed limit.

Cyclists are forced to ride facing oncoming traffic and, on some sections, along a very narrow shoulder. City taxes are ever-increasing, but the Hart Highway has been left out in the cold when it comes to bike lanes. It's well overdue for the City of Prince George to put some of our tax dollars into additional biking lanes so we can all safely share the road. Healthy communities promote pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly lanes.
