Hair Raising at Ecole College Heights

Around Our Schools

What is hot pink, lime green, and mohawk shaped?

Well, at cole College Heights Elementary this week, it was M. St-Denis' hair. Thanks to the fine grooming of Mr. Nipp and the artful eyes of Mme Castley and Mme Trepanier, the school got it'

s payback for raising $1500 for Terry Fox this year.

Also this week, staff and students attended the first Social Responsibility Assembly. The school is focussed on teaching a variety of important virtues for building strong character in kids. The focus since the start of the year has been kindness. At the assembly, selected students were recognized as "kindness stars" by their teachers. Congratulations to all. The next virtue of focus is tolerance.

October was Library Month and we are proud to report that 2,334 books were signed out. Well done, readers!

The Kindergarten costume parade was just one of many highlights of Halloween at the school. The enthusiasm for costumes didn't stop there. A total of 322 staff and students got in the spirit by dressing up for the day. Finally, to end the week, the Rotary Club of Prince George presented all grade 4 students with a dictionary as part of their support of literacy in schools for which we are very thankful.

Hallways are once again less spooky as students and staff of Ecole Heather Park Elementary have completed numerous Halloween activities and the 'regular' school activities continue. In our goal to keep both both mind and bodies active, once again there are weekly skating opportunities on Fridays at the nearby Elks Centre. Since the start of the school year, there has been a lot of buddy work going on around the school: including, Mrs. McLachlan Ks with Mr. Laupitz's 5s, Mme. Lane's 4/5s with Mme Dougherty's K/1s, and Mrs.Todd's 7s with Mrs. Beach/ McConachie's Ks. It is a wonderful opportunity to build community among students.

In addition, our school enthusiastically sponsored the Variety children's charity with a coin drive that lasted from Oct. 24 through to November 1. We raised $1287.02 which will be donated to Variety in Farrah W's name, one of our own and who is proudly part of their flyer. Mrs. Radway's primary class and Mr. Laupitz's and Mme Dunn's intermediate classes raised the most money for this cause and each were rewarded with a popcorn and movie afternoon for their generosity.

The students from Mrs. Hoffman and Mrs. Butchart of Highglen Montessori have cleaned the tank and are receiving the Salmonids this week. Terri of R.E.A.P.S will be addressing the school assembly on Wednesday when she brings the eyed salmon eggs. On that day the whole school will have the opportunity to learn about the salmon life cycle and care of developing fry. On Friday, students will be having their Remembrance Day Assembly. Students are planning and will be presenting their ideas to remember the veterans and heroes who fought four our freedom.

Students are busy gathering pledges for the "Hoops for Heart" to be held on Nov. 13.

Mr. Jeffery's class has been completing their choice of project to show their understanding of the plant life curriculum. Choices could be made from a diorama, research project, memory game, or power point presentation.
