The Greenway is a trail system designed for non-motorized use connecting UNBC with Forests for the World, the Otway Ski Trails and the Blue Spruce Campground.

It was formed by a collaboration of the main non-profit outdoor groups in P.G. with the support of several levels of government, business as well as tens of thousands of dollars and volunteer man-hours.

The ongoing management and maintenance of the Greenway is the responsibility of the Cranbrook Hill Greenway Society, a non-profit volunteer organization. It is an unsung facility used daily by dozens of outdoor enthusiasts and a crown jewel - one of those things that makes Prince George a truly wonderful place to live.

Sometime during the warmer weather between Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, an individual on an ATV who bypassed several "non-motorized use" signs decided to use the Greenway for a private adventure.

The fallout of their few hours of fun are deep ruts that have since frozen, creating ankle/knee twisting terrain that makes skiing and running challenging to the expert, and nearly impossible for the novice or intermediate user.

As for walking, this damage simply takes the pleasure out of the experience. This inconsiderate user entered the Greenway from the south end, Blue Spruce area, and travelled for about 12 kilometres to the Takla Road crossing and then turned around and headed back to the Blue Spruce area.

Trail repairs, I am told, will be expensive, will have to be done by volunteers and are not possible to attempt before spring, hence the trail is effectively ruined for most users until that time.

I understand that most ATV users are responsible individuals who care about the city and that this malicious vandalism is the act of just a few misguided riders.

I am hoping that those who do not condone this kind of action will come forward and donate to affect repairs for the Greenway. See website www.cranbrookhillgreenway.bc.ca.
