It really surprises me that city council would be supporting a project like TransCanada that really has nothing to do with the city.
Sure there is an office here, so there is a small tax base from that, but on the whole, aside from a few construction workers based here, there is no economic benefit for the city at all.
It also surprises me that Brian Skakun, who I think has a lot of integrity, would not dissent, based on the city's involvement.
Maybe he gets tired of always being the check in the balance of council.
I am really glad that Jillian Merrick has her eyes open and doesn't agree with every sales pitch that comes along.
Keep up the good work, Jillian!
As for McElhoes, there are lobbyists everywhere, and they are all portraying great things with the agenda of garnering support.
Their job is to embellish the positive aspects even if there is no benefit whatsoever.
And as they gather more support, they can go to other smaller jurisdictions and say 'look who is behind us'.
Gas exports: when it is gone it is gone, and our grandchildren may be looking at damming the Fraser as a way of supporting our extravagant lifestyle, or even just keeping the lights on. This greed for short term gain is rampant in our society.
We are extremely lucky to have such huge reserves of gas, but no amount of dollars will replace it as it is sold and burned.
