As someone who makes a living driving on the roads of this city, I choose to weigh in on the great pothole debate.
The problems with our city roads have been an issue for years, and keep getting worse. We cannot look back and point fingers. That is very unproductive. Also suggesting we cut a few city jobs will not solve the problem. The road repairs needed will cost in the hundreds of millions of dollars, but we need to face the facts.
Fact one: the roads must be repaired because they are horrible.
Fact two: there is no money to do it. Instead of whining about the way our city is and has been run, start posing some viable options. So far, the only one put forward is a fuel tax. Vancouver and Victoria both have one. I would rather pay a couple of hundred dollars a year on gas than a thousand on car repairs and chiropractors.
Everyone seems willing enough to chew the roads up with their big trucks and tires, but heaven forbid the city asks for help repairing them. If you have a better suggestion, I'm sure they will be all ears.
