Fond farewells

I want to mention some of the people that I wrote about in this Seniors’ Scene column that passed away in 2014; all of whom are dear friends of mine and loved by many others in one way or another.

I want to mention some of the people that I wrote about in this Seniors’ Scene column that passed away in 2014; all of whom are dear friends of mine and loved by many others in one way or another.

In memoriam these are the dear departed friends, along with a short note of memory of each of them:

Bea Dezell (105): “Granny Gadget” fun loving and her favorite saying, “Just Google it.”

Jo Selkirk (103): War veteran, long time Royal Canadian Legion member, published author and the recipient of many prestigious awards.

Dr. Jack McKenzie: Retired medical doctor, Past President of the Elder Citizens Recreation Association, member of the Knights of Columbus and the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish and life member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. as well as many prestigious awards.

Alice Shiels: 20 year member of the Prince George and District Senior Citizens Activity Centre and volunteer extraordinaire.

Mike Van Adrichem: Federal Department of Agriculture retiree, and a past Superintendent for Catholic Independent Schools.

Ron Thiel: Former Prince George City Councilor, baseball enthusiast and the recipient of the Queen’s Commemorative Medal for his service to the community.

Lou Veeken of Veekens Poultry Farm: Dutch immigrant, long time member of the Knights of Columbus, the rotary club, treasurer of many non profit groups and much more.

Nan Steindl: Member of several senior centres and bridge player devotee.

Larry Crooks: Past President of the Elder Citizens Recreation Association, member of the Knights of Columbus and member of St. Mary’s Parish.

Mae Peckham: Part time resident of Summit Lake and a curling, canoeing and out door enthusiast.

Bob Campbell: Life time member of the Prince George and Quesnel Old Time Fiddlers and a 44 year member of the Elks.

Charlotte Lapp: Retired teacher, member of the Forever Young Chorus, accomplished pianist, member and mentor of the Old Time Fiddlers.

Ben Leer: Newcomer to Prince George from Fort Nelson seeking medical treatment for cancer, a battle that, sadly he did not win in the end.

Barb Hall: Retired teacher librarian, former School District Trustee, and active member of the Heritage Committee of the Prince George Retired Teachers' Association.

Willie McDermid: Retired foreman for McDermid and Lofting, baseball zealot who took his team to Rock Island, Illinois to compete in the World Soft Ball Tournament in 1966.

Mike St. Germain: War veteran, loved to dance and play the fiddle, one of the founding members of the Old Time Fiddlers group and recipient of the City of Prince George Recreation Award of Merit.

Kathy Smith: Born in Giscome, 52 year active member of the Order of the Eastern Star and 40 year active member of the Hospital Auxiliary.
