As any family member who has watched with feelings of shock and disbelief as their relative losses touch with reality - psychosis sucks. Families affected by psychosis go through normal, predictable emotional responses to the trauma of any mental illness or addictions and we need support and education to successfully cope and adapt.
Psychosis is any condition where there is loss of contact with reality. Three in one hundred individuals will experience psychosis in their lifetime. For some like Invisible Children co-founder it is a single psychotic episode with expectations of a full recovery. For others the symptoms of psychosis - hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thoughts and behaviour - can be episodic perhaps because of drug and alcohol use or a severe mood disorder. Psychosis is a set of symptoms that are chronic for individuals living with schizophrenia.
For all the family members and friends affected by psychosis and any mental illness or addictions there are other FAMILIES keeping northern family members in mind. The Family Alliance on Mental Illness are Leaders in Involvement Empowerment and Support and provide the support and education families affected by psychosis need when faced with the trauma of any mental illness and addictions.
