Finding hope in living with virtue

New Year’s 2015 marks my 25th year on Earth. And to thank all of you, particularly my opponents, for celebrating my life and accomplishments with such fanfare this evening, I have written a short resolution you may adopt as your own.

Be it resolved that as a nation, a community, and as individuals, we will not lose hope. Beyond the wishful thinking of New Year’s Resolutions - improved waistlines and more free time - we acknowledge that there is a higher calling for every man, woman, and child that would number themselves among the free: a virtuous life.

Be it resolved that we are mortals with very real failings, with habits that are inhibiting our betterment and crutches that denigrate our potential. Most of these activities and mentalities come from deep-rooted fears within our individual beings, from experiences of failure or even injustice at the hands of others. But what is certain is this: nothing ever got done by quitting.

Be it resolved, and may it make our enemies tremble, that we will not give up. That step by step, with measurable goals and circumstances, we will continue on the long trail set down by our ancestors towards a better life for ourselves and for those yet to be born. We know it will not come all at once, that we will stumble, and some may not reach their desired end in this lifetime. But we remain committed to the pursuit of happiness, which is the definition of a virtuous life.

Be it resolved that we commit to this pursuit while acknowledging its proper foundation, the twin pillars of order and liberty. As much as we are able to pursue in this coming year, that is what we must do at home, in our communities, and around the world. From our families and friends, to our representatives and our brave soldiers, we continue to hope that all people are blessed with prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. For more than gifts, policies, and armaments, we know that these virtues are the greatest tools against discord and fear.

Finally, be it resolved that no man, woman, or child is an island - that each of us are needed in this mission to create a better life for ourselves and our world. The call to the happy, virtuous life while hard is certainly universal, and we can be sure we will be the better for answering it with all our heart, mind, and strength.

I truly do wish you all a happy and virtuous New Year. God bless you, and God bless Canada.
