Enforcement needed in Hart

The recent tragedy on the Hart Highway should open some eyes to the lack of enforcement of speed limits in the Hart area.

While I do not know that excessive speed was a contributing factor in the traffic fatality on Tuesday morning, this has long been a concern to residents of the area.

The Hart Highway is known as the Hart Highway Speedway, with most drivers ignoring the speed limits with impunity, knowing there is little enforcement. Many local area streets are poorly lit and do not have sidewalks or wide shoulders so pedestrians have to take their chances and hope the speedster coming down the road sees them.

If you are obeying the posted speed limits, you can expect to be passed by most vehicles.

Drivers weaving in and out of traffic, passing you only to turn off, or speeding through a yellow light that turns red are common faux pas.

I cannot remember the last time I saw enforcement in the Hart area and I blame the RCMP for allowing drivers to believe they can drive in any manner they wish without consequence.
