An ill-conceived idea by the regional district bureaucrats without considering the
consequences of illegal dumping. The chairman of the regional district Mr. Burgess is
indeed out of touch with reality when he states other jurisdictions with similar charges
have seen no appreciable increase in illegal dumping. Has he done a thorough
investigation as to how they collect and dispose of waste and the frequency of
collection of garbage and recyclable items?
Many other districts and municipalities across this country have refined the collection of garbage and its disposal along with the collection of recyclables to a point where a lot less trash is destined to their land fills.
It seems that it would be quite easy to implement a system where by garbage could be collected on a two week cycle and in the intervening weeks we could have curbside collection for all recyclables.
It is also common practice for a number of communities to have designated days such as three or four days in a year when residents can put out all the other large items of trash along with yard waste that cannot fit in a garbage container.
This negates the necessity for residents to make trips to a land fill site.
As for the asinine idea and implementation of doubling the fee for uncovered loads that arrive at the landfill this is just another ploy to generate more revenue.
What authority and jurisdiction do you the Regional District have in deciding how residents transport their garbage from their home to the dump?
You are not the Ministry of Transportation nor the police. The amount of trash that falls of
uncovered loads will be miniscule in comparison to what will be illegally dumped.
I don't think that the city and it's parks department has the budget and the man power to scour the vast areas of trails and hidden spots to pick up illegally dumped materials.
What consideration has been given to the employees who man the booth at the entrance to the landfill? They are going to have to deal with a lot of angry and frustrated people who come to dump off garbage.
As aresident who resides in close proximity to the Foothills site I see the consequence of illegal dumping.
The whole spectrum of how garbage and recyclable items are handled in this community needs a thorough overhaul.
It is incumbent for city council to be proactive in this regard.
