Don't ruin my piece of heaven

I am opposed to the (new) rezoning that is planned for Haldi Road and the future impact it will have on this tranquil residential semi-rural landscape set in a desirable area that is within city limits.

I feel blessed and have finally found my "little piece of Heaven" five and a half years ago. I hope city councillors think long and hard and not be hasty in deciding whether this facility will and can fit comfortably into its surroundings?

I myself and surely most of my friendly neighbours believe wholeheartedly and understand the great need for a women's recovery center up in the north and for our northern people. I myself care deeply and thrive on community spirit as I am a Block Watch captain and employed at the local golf course and Vanway school (which helped to amalgamate the children from Haldi School).

Firstly, I understand the issues surrounding addictions as I too have a family member who battles everyday with his demons. He has been in and out of recovery for 20-plus years. I strongly believe abstinence is of number one importance in the starting and continuing steps to recovery.

Secondly, we all know that illegal drugs can and will continue to be smuggled into our hospitals, jails and recovery centres alike.

This neighbourhood is not that far from town that people could not walk or ride the bus to come visit. Naturally of course, we and anyone would have honest concerns about the future of their community and its neighbourhood plan.

Largely the issues of concern are the water in our wells, septic, the newly proposed rezoning (with no cap on it) and the obvious safety and security of our families. I volunteered to be part of the first water study and look forward to the final study, which will I'm sure have more effective and accurate results.

Another concern is Marshall Smith and his ability to see this huge project through (as his last endeavor Baldy Hughes that he ditched without true reasoning behind his leaving).

Will he do this again? Who's to say he won't? Great organization wrong location.
