Done with Dick Harris and his hand-picked successor

The recent revelations about outgoing Prince George-Cariboo MP, Dick Harris came as no surprise to me.

After all, Dick embarrassed us all early on in his political career when he garnered a reputation for the worst attendance record in the House of Commons. To learn that he doesn't even live in the riding he represents is classic Harris, as is his penchant for spending taxpayer money. This time round he feels perfectly justified claiming extra travel costs for himself and his spouse.

Again classic Dick Harris.

Dick seemed to have a knack for golf tourneys and passport clinics but had very little time for real constituancy business. At last year's KEE Conference at UNBC, Tsilhqot'in Chief Joe Alphonse publicly proclaimed how he wished he could sue Mr. Harris for impersonating a Member of Parliament, claiming that Harris had never once made any effort to meet with him, or set foot on his traditional territory.

Considering the importance of the Supreme Court decision regarding the Tsilhqot'in one might think the MP for their riding might have made himself available.

But not Dick. The sad news is that Dick Harris has broken no laws. There is little that can be done to repair or change his delinquent behaviour.

What's done is done. Now for the good news: we can still send Mr. Harris a message. Dick Harris, you did not earn the opportunity to handpick your successor. You do not deserve the opportunity to have influence over this riding any longer. We do not want your legacy around for the next five years.

It's time to purge. We are spoiled.

Shirley Bond, Pat Bell, Lois Boone, John Rustad, Bruce Strachan, Paul Ramsey, Mike Morris have all demonstrated great work ethic and incredible dedication to our community over the years. We deserve the same kind of value from our federal representative.

Already, Mr Harris' hand-picked candidate has shown his contempt for the process. Prior to the election call, the candidate was showing up all over the place at meetings and flag raising as if he was already elected. However, lately the candidate doesn't seem to have time to attend public forums.

We deserve the opportunity to look into the candidate's eyes, meet him face to face and ask tough questions.

I understand that an MP's job is demanding, but we must have confidence that our MP is present, period.
