Disappointed by no Take Back the Night

I am very disappointed that there was no local Take Back the Night march this year. I had attended last year's march, and I was actually really looking forward to this one. That is saying a lot for me, as I normally do not like large crowds of people. I know that there was a Take Back the Night community day at the local Native Friendship Centre, which I briefly attended, but it just did not feel the same to me.

I saw the article in last Thursday's Citizen regarding a local woman who was still going to hold her own march at city hall. I went Thursday night, and I went Friday night as well, in spite of the pouring rain. I am persistent, to say the least.

I was happy to see that there were still at least some people who wanted to hold a Take Back the Night march, despite the cancellation. I believe that it is very important for our community to hold such events. I knew one of the missing and murdered woman, so this does hit close to home for me. It is frightening to think that I could be one of them. I wish I could say that I felt safe, no matter where I go or who I am with, but unfortunately that is not always the case.

I truly hope that the Take Back the Night march will make a reappearance next September. I, for one, will be there.
