Defending rivers from development takes vision

Many years ago I sat in Ben Meisner's living room making plans for a river trail system along the Nechako and Fraser Rivers. At the time this was a revolutionary proposal which was fought tooth and nail by city council and industry. The sky would fall and the city would become a ghost town if these trails were created.

Thirty years later, that trail system is a jewel that showcases the true beauty of Prince George - its rivers.

Currently before council is a proposal to rezone land along Otway road to industrial use. Rather than agree to this, perhaps council could deny the application and begin the process of de-industrializing our river corridors. Of course this would take many years, involve multiple small steps and require a vision beyond the next election cycle.

I am imagining a city with riparian areas occupied by residential areas, parks, recreational facilities (like Otway ski) all connected by a trail system.
