Dangerous goods travelling by rail a safety concern

It's been quite a while since I've written. My letters before were always about improving our air quality. Now eight years after the formation of PACHA, we can all breathe a little easier.

It's been quite a while since I've written. My letters before were always about improving our air quality. Now eight years after the formation of PACHA, we can all breathe a little easier. Never doubt that a small group of people can change the world.

I'm writing today about a new concern. In recent months there have been several train disasters. The two that concern me the most are the ones in Lac Megantic and Calgary. Both mayors from those communities expressed their extreme frustration over the fact that municipalities have no jurisdiction over the rail transport through their cities.

I know this is true for Prince George as well because we had no control over putting emission restrictions on CN when they allowed excessive idling of their locomotives. Does it concern others that with the steady incline in the amount of goods being transported through Prince George, by rail, that we have no way of ensuring that CN is doing this safely?

The media used to label PACHA as cage rattlers.... is it time to make a little noise people?

Sincerely,

Betty Bekkering
