Criminals win when backs are turned

Over the past couple of years the gang activity and gang related violence has come to dominate the headlines of The Citizen and other papers across the province and Canada.

Yes, we have gangs, yes, they are violent and yes, they are not afraid to do violence in public with innocent people around. And yes, it is deplorable, but unfortunately it is a reality of life in the city and surrounding region.

More and more, I hear people complain about the gangs and why aren't the authorities doing more, and in the same breath these people talk about moving to a smaller centre.

It's time you looked in the mirror because it's people like you who have the means to help curb crime. Instead of whining and sniveling, do something about it. Report suspected activity to the police. Don't ignore it and hope someone else will deal with it, because in all honesty, they are probably hoping you are going to report it.

Everybody in this city knows of someone who is indirectly or directly involved with the gangs, yet will turn a blind eye to it as long as it doesn't involve them. Then, as soon as it does, they're moaning and groaning about why nobody is doing anything about it.

Go look in the mirror and ask the person looking back at you that question and see what the answer will be.

Gangs rely on fear to keep you out of their business and until you're willing to break that cycle they will win every time.
