As a former student of Tracy Summerville I always read her column with great interest. While I enjoyed her recent column "Declining trust in system leading to rise of Trump" (Oct. 8, 2016 Citizen) I would like to respectfully suggest that she has missed an important point.
She says, "... the argument I am making here is that conservatives have undermined their own position by failing to articulate how their ideology venerates tradition, elite rule, and how the state might help to define and educate citizens for virtue in the 21st century."
I would counter that today's conservatives see no role for the state other than national defence and protection of private property, and that rich libertarians have undermined her notion of coservativism and hijacked the conservative name.
These are not Joe Clark's Red Tories.
