Commemorative concern

I am saddened that yet again free transit service was not offered on Remembrance Day.

I am saddened that yet again free transit service was not offered on Remembrance Day. On the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One and with the events in Ottawa so fresh in our minds, more people than ever were motivated to attend the Remembrance Day ceremonies at the Civic Centre and Cenotaph.

However, for those of us who don't drive, getting to the ceremonies meant contemplating a long and cold walk. For people on fixed incomes, the taxi budget is saved for emergency use and walking for hours in the cold is not an option for many seniors or people with disabilities.

BC communities similar in size to Prince George offer a limited transit schedule on most statutory holidays, usually the Sunday bus schedule. Transit ridership is increasing in Prince George but service levels also need to increase to meet the needs of users.

I am disappointed that the city has chosen to ignore the calls from many individuals and organizations over the years to provide bus service on this most important of days. At the very least, a shuttle service, similar to that offered on Canada Day to Fort George Park, needs to be available.
