For anyone who has lived on the coast, winter is a collection of damp, rainy, and dark months. hough the people who live on the coast are sure to brag to their friends up north about the lack of snow and the warmer temperatures, the trade off for the lack of snow is a low, dark sky that makes everyone a bit squirrelly. There were times when we lived in Victoria that we didn't see the sky for three months. Let me tell you from experience, not seeing the sky for days on end makes people crazy and mean.
I have to be careful about complaining about the cold weather and the snow at home lest my husband use it as an excuse to move back to the coast (he would move in an instant during the stupidly cold days), however I will mention that this winter, we haven't seen much of the sky or sun. I don't like it. At all.
In Victoria in the winter, the sky is low and gray and at times, it felt like the entire city was covered in Eeyore's rain cloud. Prince George, this winter, hasn't been much better.
After a fairly dreary January, I am pleased that the sun has come out again. These crisp blue mornings with the sun shining through my windows streaked with toddler fingerprints, make me want to run outside and sing a number from Annie. This, of course, does not happen because when you actually open the door it feels like you have just been punched in the face by a snowman and then beaten with an icicle.
After the cold takes my breath away, I sadly shut the door and slump back inside. Instead of frolicking in the snow, I curl up on my couch with my kids with the curtains open and the sun shining in and dream that winter will soon be over.
