I was thrilled to see the city working on the animal bylaws. I saw a dog running loose on the Hart yesterday. It ran into traffic and was hit by a truck. This is not an isolated incident and nor does it only happen to dogs.
An older woman walking two large, strong dogs on leash was threatened by a dog not on leash, that was crouched, growling and ready to attack when a woman driving by in a car, stopped and defused the situation.
Then there was a dog on leash going by with its family when it was attacked and bitten by a dog not on leash. I heard the owner shout "your dog just bit mine."
A split second later that dog shot across the street and knocked me off my feet in my own yard. I am in my 70s and should not be afraid to garden in my front yard.
A woman walking her large great Dane puppy on a long leash shouted at me in the park that old people should not be allowed in the park if they are afraid of being knocked down by playful puppies.
I don't see any need for my neighbour's cat to kill the birds that come to my pond.
So yes I think its time we got a handle on the pet situation but a bylaw won't help unless there is enforcement and not just during working hours.
Dogs running loose are not seen only between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays.
