Those of us who have the privilege (according to the parking agreement signed by each person) of monthly parking in city parkades have now found our parking fee's will double as of January 2014. I currently pay $48.66 a month and as of January 1, the fee will be $90.00 per month. This is an increase of $496 per year that I am being bullied into paying.
Why we ask? For improvements maybe, fresh paint, clean elevators and stair wells, closed in heated parking, improved lighting for early winter nights and late winter mornings we might think? I think not.
I believe a solution has been found to the downtown parking meter debate. They say "no meters brings visitors to the downtown". But no meters means no money for City Hall. ....but wait. There are a lot of office workers that park downtown. Why not double their parking fee? Problem solved for city hall. Add another expense to my monthly budget. Which has seen a meagre two per cent increase in the last two years.
This office worker, who can't justify or afford this unreasonable increase, will now be parking on the downtown streets and moving my vehicle every two hours because I can't afford to park in a city lot.
Fellow Citizens of Prince George, be aware, parking downtown Monday to Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., will become very difficult after Jan. 1,2014 as office workers in the same position as myself will be filling the downtown street parking spaces and moving our vehicles every two hours.
Thank you city council.
