Many, many years ago, during the height of the Cold War, the American anticommunist media, parroted by the Canadian media, since that's where I read about it, would ridicule the Soviet Union and China for having early childhood education, the premise being that things were so good in the democracies that families needed only one earner to sustain them, whereas those horrible Communists were tearing away children from their mother's care and indoctrinating them into socialism.
It's worthwhile noting that in the 1950s the participation rate of women in the workforce was around 25 per cent, now it is about 82 per cent in Canada.
Today I noticed a study which claims that early childhood education should begin at age three.
Go figure.
