For the past few years, I have been buying bread at McGavin's Bread Basket.
If you never have been to McGavin's, I have a few questions to ask you: 1) why not? 2) did you get lost in the industrial area? and 3) don't you like saving money?
When I stocked up on my loaves this past weekend and again, I was overwhelmed by how great of a deal I was getting, I told the clerk how excited I was to be here again. She looked at me kindly and smiled. Probably she was thinking, "This woman needs to get out more if cheap bread excites her to the extent that it does."
She would be right.
But let me lay it out for you so you so you understand. Being able to buy bread for less than $4.99 a loaf is such a bonus to a family's grocery budget that a glee unlike any other fills your soul. If you buy your bread at McGavin's in a particular discounted section and you buy it in multiples of 10, you only pay $1.43 per loaf. And, for every $10 you spend, you get a stamp on a discount card and after seven stamps, you receive $5 off you next purchase. It's a deal for a deal and it's awe-inspiring.Sometimes, if the stars align in a particular way, there exists other deals, the likes of which you have never seen before.
Last time I went in, I was able to buy double loaves of enormous rye bread for a dollar a package.
I spent $5 and got 10 loaves of bread. After I left the store, I called everyone I knew to tell them about the deal I got.
I even called my gluten-intolerant friends in case their families needed this deal.
In our house, this sort of excitement is only surpassed by what is known as Cheap Chicken Day.
Cheap Chicken Day is a semi-annual holiday wherein a casual shopper discovers their regular purchase of skinless, boneless chicken breasts is inexplicably half off. What was $20 a package yesterday, is now only $10.
The victorious shopper comes home with twice as many packages of delicious poultry meat and announces proudly to their partner "Cheap Chicken Day!" and all in the household rejoice.
Chicken is cooked and satisfaction ensues.
Sometimes, mercury goes into retrograde and Cheap Chicken Day aligns with Super Awesome Cheap Bread Day and the household enjoys chicken salad sandwiches for days.
Rising food prices, we've got you beat.
