I feel compelled to respond to the article detailing Freda Watkins' concern over Dr. Katakkar's recent resignation.
Five years ago I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma and underwent treatment at UHNBC. Over the course of my treatment and follow up I have also seen three different oncologists and I can sympathize with some of Ms. Watkins' frustrations. However, I disagree strongly with her criticisms of the BC Cancer Agency. Their protocols are based on scientific research to provide the best possible outcomes for patients. As a patient who has been pumped full of a toxic concoction of medications I was quite thankful to know that my treatment protocols were backed by good research.
It is not the BC Cancer Agency's role to provide individualized treatment protocols for every single cancer patient in the province. The BC Cancer Agency oversees treatment and research to result in the safest and most effective treatment possible. I am very thankful for the attentive, professional, and extremely compassionate care that I received from the nurses, staff, and doctors at the cancer clinic.
