What a wonderfully busy Valentine's Day week for the students and staff at Ecole Heather Park Elementary School. The choir, under the leadership of Mme. Shaw will present a short informal choir concert today from 11:40 to 12:10 in the MPR. They will sing 2-3 fun songs, one of them their Valentine favourite. In addition, any class that is interested in performing a poem or song of any type has been encouraged to present. It should be an enjoyable time for everyone.
Friday is a jam-packed day. There is an assembly to 'kick off' the ever popular hockey raffle PAC fund raiser. In addition students from several senior classes (Mr. Edge, Mrs. Todd, Mrs. Attree, and Mrs. Waterman) will be watching Delhi 2 Dublin perform at Vanier Hall. This Canadian world music group from Vancouver, whose style has been described as "primarily a fusion of Bhangra and Celtic" music and the "United Nations of rock 'n roll" is sure to have everyone's feet tapping. ***
The winter activities continue to be enjoyed at cole College Heights Elementary School with more classes going skating at CN Centre. This week it was our K/1 class and some Grade 3/4 students. Other students, Grade 3, 4, and 5 were off to Otway to enjoy the trails and their first day with the 3-day Learn to Ski program offered for school groups.
Both the boys and girls' basketball teams have started game action with the boys playing games against Southridge and Vanway, and the girls playing against Vanway. It is so great to see these young athletes learning such a great sport.
With February being Heart Month at our school, our Healthy School Ambassadors are getting hearts pumping by offering skipping at lunch. Most recently the Grade 1 students were invited to enjoy all types of jumping activities including helicopters, Chinese skipping, regular skipping, slithering snakes, and even some tandem skipping. It is so great to see so many students taking part.
Mrs. Briscoe continues to work her magic by bringing aboriginal culture to our students. This week she led a traditional sharing circle with some Grade 6/7 students while they shared what they learned about aboriginal history as it relates to the residential school experience. With another group of Grade 6/7 students, soap carvings were taught and students created beautiful bear and/orlucluc canoe carvings.
Lastly, we'd like to give a big "Bienvenue" to Mrs. Iorns who is our new kindergarten teacher.

February is proving to be a pretty busy month for the students and staff at Zion Lutheran Christian School. We finished up a pretty exciting floor hockey tournament that ended with one team, The Droids, emerging as champions. The teachers then challenged them to a friendly game that was played in front of the whole school. Final Score: Teachers 4, Droids 1. It was a lot of fun.
The science fair takes place on Thursday Feb. 28 beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The students are looking forward to our skiing trip to Tabor next week and our skating outings happening later on in the month. Four of our grade 7 students have been busy studying and practicing for Quiz Me. The written elimination test is next week .
It is hard to believe, but we are also fast approaching the 100th day of school. The students celebrate this event each year by bringing in 100 food items that all get mixed together to form one big 'snack mix' that is shared with everyone. February 14 is also the last day of our "100 Nights of Reading Challenge". If the school can reach its collective goal of 3000 nights, they earn a special whole school field trip. The school has also been busy preparing for a series of open houses that are happening every Wednesday morning from 9 to noon. All are welcome to drop in for a tour. We are now accepting registrations for the upcoming 2013/2014 school year.
