Prince George and the UNBC School of Business played host to a highly successful JDC West Business School Competition this past weekend. JDC West is organized and managed by business students with minimal assistance from the university. The host school creates an organizing committee and each of the competing schools creates a competition committee for the event. The competition is primarily academic in nature with 11 academic teams plus a sports and social team. The competition featured teams from the 10 leading business schools in western Canada including UBC, SFU and U of A.

I can tell you from personal observation that the amount of work involved is extensive for the students who manage or participate in the competition. For example, the teams of three students for each of the 10 case competitions analyzed, solved and presented a business case virtually every week for four months in preparation for the competition.

Teams from UNBC's School of Business placed first in the Business Strategy, first in the Not-for-Profit, second in the Entrepreneurship, and third in the Human Resources Management case competitions. This is an extraordinary result considering the number of students available to participate and the resources per student allocated to our business school compared to the other schools in the competition. he results are comparable to Canada's best performance in the Olympic Games.

I had the privilege of being one of the coaches for the two first place teams. The students on these teams are exceptionally bright, enthusiastic, dedicated and hardworking. They reaffirmed what I have always believed and that is that our top business students are as good as or better than the top students of any business school in Canada.
