I'm writing this letter not entirely certain what outcome I'm hoping for other than raising awareness of a truly important service gap in Prince George and how I hope to fill that gap.
This service is in consultation with a international board-certified lactation consultant, essentially a breastfeeding specialist. As of today this service will not be available at UHNBC until such time as the vacant position becomes filled.
This leaves hundreds of pregnant or postpartum moms with nowhere to turn.
But it's not that there is nowhere to turn, they just might not know.
There are a number of community resources available including Breastfeeding Cafe, La Leche League and a new community based service called Bump and Beyond offering home visits to prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding families provided by a certified lactation consultant.
My hope is to spread this information as widely as possible so mommas of Prince George do not feel alone and unsupported in their decision to breastfeed their babies.
If The Citizen is willing to shed some light on this it would be appreciated.
The resources for breastfeeding women are:
Breastfeeding Cafe, Jocelyn Logan.
La Leche League, Rowena Mills.
Bump and Beyond, Sandra Martin-Payne.
Mothers and families are encouraged to reach out at any time for support and guidance.
