Beware of dangers, cyclists

Cyclists on Blackwater Road: Last Saturday a pack of cyclists were travelling on Blackwater Road heading back to town some three abreast, oblivious to the danger that this posed to themselves and motorists.

From Tedford Road (one road before the West lake road) which is 12 kilometres from the highway there are 22 corners before connecting with Highway 16.

This road when last paved included scant to no paved shoulders and no bike lane. It is not uncommon to encounter a logging truck, flat bed, crew cab, or in the summer, truck and camper pulling a boat along this road and frequently on a corner.

The posted speed limit is 80 kilometres per hour.

The locals often travel slower than this speed but there are many that do not. Imagine meeting one or a pack of cyclists on one of these corners.

There is nowhere to go except the ditch which is quite deep in places. Cyclists please consider travelling where there are less corners, wider shoulders, where there is a bike lane or a road with less traffic.

Cyclists groups if you could post signs showing that there are cyclists ahead this might help prevent the real possibility of a serious accident.
