Be responsible pet owners

I would like to thank very much the folks at city animal control. The dogs that are out loose in Prince George without supervision are in various types of danger.

I would like to thank very much the folks at city animal control. The dogs that are out loose in Prince George without supervision are in various types of danger.

They may be hit by a car (which is a negative experience for both animal and driver), be in a fight with other strays, or become totally lost, eventually dying of thirst or starvation - not a good way to go.

The other danger is an unsafe encounter between our children and some strays (animals can be frightened and confused, not meaning to scare children). I have called several times over my 15 years here in Prince George to our city animal control when sighting a stray dog.

The people who listen to my call and the people who come out in their city trucks to try to help these animals are just wonderful.

Let's get rid of the outdated image of the evil dog pound person with the net, scouring the city streets looking for helpless animals.

Instead, I have encountered people who truly care about the dog's welfare and are compassionate and caring in their methods.

But, let's look at this in an altogether different way - be responsible with your pet ownership - supervise your dog, and make sure it is safe and secure behind doors and fences.

Don't let them roam in the city - this is illegal and totally neglectful to your dog - if you love your companion animal, protect him or her.
