After years of neglect by the Liberal provincial government, we find that the moose population is down.
The pine beetle epidemic wiped out much of the moose feed and cover. Studies should have been started back then. As an enjoyer of the outdoors, I have seen more wolf tracks.
This to me means a larger population of wolves. What must we do to correct this problem? First, we need to replant these pine beetle kill areas. Next, we need a wolf cull. Wolves eat moose. I know this will have the Greenpeacers lighting their hair on fire but it has to happen. We may also have to shut moose or limit the amount of moose harvested through the Limited Entry Hunting draw for a few years.
We need more biologists studying the impact of the pine beetle and also the wildfires that devastated British Columbia this year. I'm sure a lot of animals perished in them. Knowledge and recommendations from these scholars will allow us to bring the moose population back into balance.
