The United Nations is an organization created in 1945 to help promote international co-operation and create and maintain order guided by purposes and principles as outlined in its Charter. It has 193 member nations.
In March 2016, when Donald Trump was running for president, he made a speech in which he stated: "The United Nations is not a friend of democracy. It's not a friend to freedom," he said. "It's not a friend even to the United States of America, where, as you know, it has its home. And it surely is not a friend to Israel."
On Tuesday, President Trump addressed the General Assembly and in true Trump form and in campaign rally style he bragged about how much better the U.S. is since he was elected in November. He continued to go on and on about how great the USA is.
Really? I guess Trump didn't get the memo that this wasn't billed as a brag fest. In my many years, I have never been so humiliated by anyone who claims to be an American, let alone the president.
It is true that North Korea is a serious problem. The previous four presidents failed to stop North Korea's progress towards a nuclear weapon and the missiles to deliver them. President George H.W. Bush removed U.S. nuclear weapons from the region as well as reduced the U.S. troop levels in the region. He gave North Korea the breathing space they were supposedly seeking. North Korea did not budge from its nuclear program. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush negotiated sanctions. President Barack Obama essentially looked the other way. North Korea kept on with its program.
Trump is choosing to apply his sociopathic methods with matching each of Kim Jon-un's threats with counter threats in an ever-increasing battle of one-upmanship. Finally, he is resorting to name calling.
My niece Deb is an extremely bright woman. She is an excellent mother. So I posed the question to her. As children we were always taught to respect and look up to the president. How do you approach this with your 11-year-old?
Being a relative of mine, she is generally not at a loss for words. Deb said that she shies away from this discussion with Jake. "I am actually afraid and just do not know how to explain what is happening now with the current president."
So the president boastfully proclaimed that United States is prepared to destroy North Korea and further went on to refer to Kim Jong-un as Rocket Man being on a suicide mission for himself.
Trump went on to refer to Iran as an "economically depleted rogue state" whose chief export is violence. He went on to pass the blame on Obama for a poor nuclear arms deal citing that it is one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered. He added that it is an embarrassment to the United States.
Trump also said that many countries are going to hell and it's up to the members of the UN to fix it. This is the same organization that he ripped to shreds in 2016.
Chief of Staff John Kelly summed it all up in one photo in which he was seen holding his face in his hands as his boss spoke at the UN.
So where will this genius president take us all that live in this world and want to survive?
Stay tuned. Take a vacation before you can't. Enjoy your children and grandchildren. This may be your last opportunity.
