Students in Grade 2 and Grade 3 at Sacred Heart school attended the eucharist at Sacred Heart Cathedral to mark the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on Monday. The students welcomed their classroom guests, the red wigglers composting worms, on that day also. The students will look after the worms for the school year. Thanks to Tanya at REAPS for the great presentation. Our cross-country runners participated in the Rainbow Park meet on Thursday. Our annual Terry Fox Walk will take place today, following a eucharist of Thanksgiving at Sacred Heart Cathedral. This will be hosted by Mrs. Glennen's Grade 4 and Grade 5 class.

The intermediate students of Highglen Montessori elementary school are completing their research on their chosen peacemaker. This information will be displayed for other students to learn from.

The inter-generational program has started again for this year. Students from Mrs. Maher and Mrs. Butchart will go to Simon Fraser Lodge today and reunite with some of their friends. An autumn craft, snack and social time will encourage this relationship. Mrs. Haddock's class will sing at the lodge next week. Students from Mrs. Rockwell's class will be going to Jubilee Lodge next week as well.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, cole Heather Park elementary is definitely giving thanks to more than 70 parents who signed up at our recent open house to be volunteers. Their talents and time will definitely be put to good use in the upcoming months.

During the harvest season of September, Mrs. Girard's Grade 4 class has been outside identifying plants used by Aboriginal people for medicines and foods under the guidance of EHPE's Aboriginal education worker, Mrs. C. Senger. Recently, more than 60 people attended and helped elect a new PAC executive. The first PAC meeting was held on Oct. 6.

This week, four classes attended a very special presentation with the famous "Bat Lady," Judy MacKay. Mrs. Mackay told bat tales, explained folklore and idioms, while teaching about bat habitats and the place of bats in food chains. We appreciate Mrs. Girard's efforts in organizing this.

On the last Friday before Thanksgiving, there is a traditional Zimbabwean musical presentation: Marimba Muzuva (meaning Voices of Wood in the Sun).

They play a variety of different marimbas and other instruments including magavhu (leg shakers) and gumboots (yes, simply rubber boots).

Over the past nine years, the members of Muzuva have brought their varied backgrounds and experiences to their performances and have simply enjoyed making music for everyone. They live the Shona proverb: "If you can talk you can sing - if you can walk you can dance."

To make the Around Our Schools better, we would like you to provide information on events that are upcoming at your school. Hopefully, this will allow us more opportunities for photos and stories of events that are happening.

These opportunities are hard to get if the events have already passed. E-mails can be sent to schools@pgcitizen.ca.
